We received two plants as a gift & did not know what species they were. Found out through Mr Google that they were stapelias but have had to wait until they flowered to find out which species they were. This unknown stapelia is getting ready to flower too & we were able to identify it when that happened.

The two flower stapelia flower buds have grown very quickly. The unknown stapelia's flower bud is now 10/11cms long, exclusive of the stem. The other bud, on the same stem, has started to die off. Think it is a sacrificial bud. Whichever one grew the fastest gets the prize, so to speak. ;)

Today's image. Wouldn't be surprised if it opened tomorrow.

The view from the rear. This is going to be a BIG flower. Especially considering the size of the plant.

This little, or should I say big, beauty still hasn't opened!!! :o It is now 12cms long minus its stalk, which would add a few more cms to its length. The stem of the plant, on which it it growing, also has grown & is now 18cms tall.

I am getting decidedly impatient. :x

Ta dah!!! Today it finally opened & we were able to give this plant a name. It is a stapelia gigantea "Carrion Flower".

This how it started first thing this morning.

Fully opened. It opened the other four petals all at once. The flower measures 30cms across.

Good news!! The stapelia gigantea, also known as "Carrion Flower" has grown some buds. Last time it did this only one of them progressed to the flower stage. Hope we have some more flowers this time. It has an amazing flower. :cool4:

This stapelia gigantea has really grown since we first received it a little over a year ago. It has quadrupled in size. :bravo:

The stapelia gigantea, also known as "Carrion Flower" the same as the leendertziae, is growing flower buds. Last year there were two buds but only one developed into a flower & the other became a sacrificial bud. Do not know why this happens. Maybe because the flower is so huge compared to the plant, it needs all its resources to cope with the one. Two flowers may be just too much for it to cope with.

Last year there were only two stems but this year there are at least eight with more growing. Perhaps this year it may be able to support two flowers. We shall see.

There are two buds here as well as new stems growing.

The stapelia gigantea "Carrion Flower" buds four days later. It will be interesting to see which one forges ahead.

The two buds on the stapelia gigantea continue to grow rather rapidly. Here are today's pics of them. They aren't quite the same size. One is 12.5cm (5ins) long & the other 11cm (just over 4ins). Hopefully, that may mean one might open before the other which would be great. We can only wait & see. :luck: The second bud is certainly, now, too big to be a sacrificial bud as has happened previously.

The stapelia leendertziae is also now growing new buds. Here are the two plants buds showing the difference in size, although the leendertziae buds aren't as developed as the gigantea's buds. Nonetheless, they are still much smaller with the open leendertsziae flowers being just 7.5cms (3ins) long.

Another view of the stapelia gigantea buds.

The first bud is the largest. It is hard to notice the difference in size though.

The stapelia gigantea buds have BOTH grown. Am so pleased about this as previously the other bud has stopped growing & dropped off the plant. Think the fact that the plant has grown so much & therefore has much more resources may be the reason both buds have grown. :bravo:

    The buds are 12.5cm long!!!

Here are some pics from yesterday of the two opened stapelia gigantea flowers. Itwas a bit of a surprise that the two buds opened at the same time. these flowers are 30cm (12in) across.

Have just noticed a strange happening on the stapelia gigantea which I have not not seen in the stapelia leedertziae. It has started new growth on the top of some of it older stems. It hasn't done this before. Perhaps it needs repotting. Now would be the time to do it as it doesn't have any buds yet.

These plants will drop any buds they may have, if they are disturbed at this time. So no repotting when they are in bud.

The new extensions on the top of many of the stapelia gigantea stems have grown so big. There are also many buds, all concentrated in the one area, too.

The stapelia gigantea buds have suddenly grown. I must be blind to have not notice the tiny buds had had a growth spurt. D'uh. :sheesh:

Wonder how many of these will actually grow to a full flower, as it sometimes will sacrifice buds to enable one or two to grow to a huge flower.

    Looking at them front on.
