Yes, we certainly do Mary, especially with this wonderful & rare plant. It is quite dramatic with its new growth which only happens in mid-spring. If it is a bad season for it, it will only grow a few new shoots & that's it for the year. Last spring was a beauty & it had new shoots from nearly every branch. Bushfire smoke helps it also.

It is an amazing plant & was our most expensive, even more than the orchids. We love it.

Maybe the new growth season for 2012 has begun even if it is late spring.

The Wollemi Pine had developed a brown, dead looking top piece which was about 1.25cms (½in) tall. This was worrying, especially as there was no other new branch growth apparent, but, suddenly, things started to happen & this new top has grown through the "dead" bit. Fantastic. I was hoping this wonderful plant would have a way of "curing" itself. This is its yearly growth period so we hope the branches will also start sending out new growth, although it is a bit late in the season. Last year, every branch had new growth on them. Maybe this year there won't be as much activity.

The beautiful Wollemi pine has only sprouted this new growth, for this growing season. At least it grew through the, seemingly, dead piece at the top of the plant's trunk & has added 5cms to its height, at this stage. It seems to be still growing.

The Wollemi Pine's topknot continues to grow steadily. Maybe it used all its energy last year with the large amount of new growth it had. It certainly is having a rest this year.

Hi K, a Wollemi is an ancient "gondwalah land" (sp) tree recently discovered in the Wollemi valley region of NSW, It lives only in a deep hidden gorge!

Our tree is taken from a few cuttings that were retreived by helicopter and planted to make the species safe
they have been made available through a large retail shopping chain here in Oz!
I believe some have been sent to major botanical gardens in the states and elsewhere.

You would have to get a very small plant to try to bonsai it, K. They are usually sold at about 18 ins (45cms) in height. Ours is now about 4ft (120cms) tall. In the ground, under the right conditions, they'll grow to 40 metres or 133ft with a girth of over 1 metre or 3 & 1/2 ft diameter. They will live for hundreds of years with the Bill tree being about 1000 years old.

This is a link to the first post I made re the Wollemi Pine. As Bruiser says it is a very ancient tree species & was thought to be extinct 2 million years ago. There is a link to info re the Wollemi Pine within this post. Wollemi Pine

This is strange. Our beautiful Wollemi Pine has decided to start to grow some new growth in late summer instead of spring as is usual. It only had a small growth spurt last spring. Now it is making up for it.

Wollemi Pine. New growth is the soft green leaves sprouting from the ends of the branches.

Some new growth starting to pop open & the swollen buds at the ends of branches denote new growth to come. This is the top of our tree.

Another new branch & leaf growth has appeared on our Wollemi Pine. This happened very quickly. Most unusual growth pattern this year. This is the only one on it at the moment.

The new Wollemi Pine spring growth is growing quickly.

This is growing on another stem shooting off the main stem & is the same growth as the second pic above seven days later.

The ends of some of the Wollemi pine's branches are also sprouting new growth. There are many buds at the ends of other branches.
