default Spathiphyllum ~ Madonna or Peace Lily

Post by Joy on Wed 03 Aug 2011, 2:18 pm

Our spathiphyllum has quite a history. We have had this plant for well over 20 years & it, originally lived with us on a pleasure cruiser we lived & worked on. It adapted well to life ashore but after several years of doing well, we moved into a place that wasn't plant-friendly so for 11 years it was dreadfully neglected but it struggled on. It became smaller & smaller, with leaves dying & the ones growing were only a fraction of their previous size & it never flowered.

When we moved to our present home we repotted it, finally, fertilised it regularly & sat it near our floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door. It gets plenty of light but very little direct sun, which these plants don't really like. The plant has thrived & has thrilled us with multiple flowers each year. We cannot believe just how much it has grown & how healthy it looks, especially as it would be close to 25 years old. The poor thing could do with a repot but we would have nowhere to put it!!

Taken about 10 months after we had repotted it.

Have only just noticed this image has a reflection of a worker in safety clothes in the glass of the picture on the wall. The spathiphyllum spathe seems to be looking at it.

The latest image of this wonderful spathiphyllum taken yesterday. It has appreciated a mild pruning & I think I shall cut some more of its leaves off. Especially the wind battered ones.

The solo spathiphyllum spathe declined, was removed, then there were many.

Now there are ten. One hasn't opened as yet & is hiding in amongst the foliage. Our spathiphyllum is doing so well.

Thanks, Dawn. This is another plant which is both very attractive & very easy to grow. It tolerates much neglect & abuse but will reward you, handsomely, when it gets some TLC. Then there is the added bonus of it being a top quality air cleaner. :bravo:
