We finally woke to a beautiful sunny day with clear blue skies, so I was able to place the adenium obesum in such a position where it would catch the sun on that water rotted bit of its caudex for most of the morning. It hasn't had that for quite a few weeks.

Wellllllll, just went outside to check if there were any ants on it & wearing gloves, I pulled the outer flap of "skin" that covered the site. Lo & behold, there was a hole which perfectly fitted about half of my finger!!!! It goes up inside the caudex by the top third of my finger. This hole is perfectly hollowed out & there is no mushy tissue left. It also went, what was previously, underground so that when I repotted & accidently lifted the plant above its former level, it also exposed some rotten tissue. So that action turned out to be serendipitous in two ways.

The ants have gone but they healed the plant, I believe, by clearing away all the water damaged tissue. They were our FRIENDS!!!!

Through the miracle that is digital photograpy, ta dah. the pics I just took while still posting here.

The last of its old leaves have dropped off including the one with the hole in it. The new leaves are growing rapidly & the hole is getting quite a bit of sun. The caudex & branches are a very healthy looking silvery green so I am very hopeful of the outcome. :D My fingers are still crossed though.

More good signs with this wonderful adenium obesum. A third branch has very tiny leaf buds at its end. Could se two so far. The other two lots of leaves are growing well & look very shiny & healthy, apart from one distorted leaf. However, I feel a distorted leaf is better than no leaf at all.

    The largest bunch of leaves.

These are also looking good & growing well with more leaf buds showing as the other leaves grow.

The teeny tiny leaf buds here are really bright green but in this pic they are showing up as yellow. They afre on the closest branch.

That little blob of a leaf in the front of the above image of the adenium obesum has now grown, as had the larger bunch of leaves. This looks very hopeful.

Here is the other bunch of leaves. We are hopeful that some of its other branches will, also, soon sprout leaves. This is such an amazing plant.

Our wonderful adenium obesum v obesum seems to be continuing to recover. There are more leaves appearing & its branches & caudex remain a healthy silvery green.

The new leaves are growing well with more showing. This is getting really hopeful.

The latest leaf growth. It doesn't seem to take long for them to start growing from a tiny green blob. These were barely visible a few days ago.

It appears that the adenium obesum has fooled us. It has been, quietly, adding new growth to the branches with leaves. Never noticed this, Even eagle eyed Bruiser didn't notice. One branch has added about 12-15cms in length, as well as more leaves!!! There are also flower buds. Yippee!!!

This bunch of leaves has a bud hidden in among the leaves.

The same branch with a side view. This is the one that has grown about 12-15cms.

Another of the growing branches. It has only grown about 2.5cms but it also has grown more leaves & has a few flower buds. Hope they do flower.

All this growth is another excellent sign but we still worry about this plant.

The flower buds are growing & so are the numbers of leaves, as are the branches. There are still branches that haven't, as yet, grown any leaves. Think I may prune the tips of them as they have dried, withered ends.

We are rather pleased at how things are progressing with this lovely plant. It is now autumn so we don't expect too much more growth as it is coming into its dormancy period. Though, with our mild winters, who knows what will happen.

    Two flower buds.

This is the branch that has had the biggest growth spurt.

There are two more branches with leaves lower down & toward the front. Only one seems to have flower buds.

This is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first flower for six months has appeared. The adenium obesum never flowered at all during summer. It was too busy trying to survive & grow a few leaves.

A close up. It just shows how lighting conditions change the colouring of these flowers.
