default Full Moon In June ~ With A Total Lunar Eclipse.

Post by Joy on Thu 16 Jun 2011, 11:21 am

Last night was a full June moon & it involved a total lunar eclipse. This occurred for us, in East Coast Australia, around 5am. this morning. Woke up this morning, really early, so thought I should go out into the cold to see if I could get some shots of the eclipse happening. :O Especially as I had already taken some images of the evening's full moon.

There was some cloud floating around & it blocked some of the event but most could be seen. Unfortunately, my poor camera did not pick up the light red colouring of the moon which happened just before the total eclipse. We weren't to see the moon come out of the eclipse as it was to have set before then. Also, there was thick cloud on the horizon.

Shall start with last night's full moon. It rose before dark & looked rather striking, on our horizon, as it came up over the top of a neighbour's beautiful poinciana tree.

These three shots were taken through Bruiser's Bat Cave window. The tree on the right is the large, & magnificent, mango tree from two doors up the street.

For this shot I used another scene position on my camera. It was Landscape instead of the Night position.

    Love the cerise glow.

This was at 4.58am. The eclipse seems to be speeding up. The cloud was a disappointment.

5.01am. Still cloudy. At least at this stage it was see-through cloud.

Only one minute later. 5.02am, there seems to be a big move in the progression of the eclipse.

5.17am. The cloud was thicker & impeded the view of the eclipse for a while. Actually, I thought it had already happened as it was that dark.

This shot shows some of the redness of the moon.

Gosh that was great Joy! , wonderful shots of the moon! :coolsign: . We saw the reddish hue it had in between the clouds that were blowing past, and the almost total eclipse also in between the clouds. But missed all the rest. Thank you for the great photos :photos: :photos:

Thanks Dawn. Just before it went totally black, the moon had a reddish cast to it but my camera couldn't pick it up. All I had was a heap of empty images. :lol2: Shame, as it was fairly dramatic but not as red as was forecast. The last pic was taken when the moon had totally eclipsed so there was a reason for its blackness. :D Glad it had finished then as it was starting to get REALLY cold. :cold:

In photo#12 there is a slight red hue ?. I think, that is about the same amount of redness we had here. Brrr :cold: you can say that again. We have had thunderstorms all day yesterday and last night. The thunder is rolling away here now as I am typing. Thanks again for the photos Joy! they were great :thankyou:

It was funny how one or two of the images managed to show a reddish tinge, Dawn, but the rest were mostly white, as was the moon at that time. It didn't seem to go light red until just before the total eclipse, then it went black. It did get quite cold after 5am. Colder than it was at 4.30am.

Do hope you don't have a stormy day today. :D

I have just found these pictures of the moon over Sydney in this link.

    Red Moon

Yes we are going to have a very windy stormy and wet day today. It hasn't stopped raining since yesterday evening. But strangely enough the rained stopped just long enough for us to see the bit we did see of the eclipse. :bye:

Thanks for that link, Dawn. It was certainly more red down in Sydney, than it was here. We just saw the traditional copper hue of a normal lunar eclipse. The Chilean volcanic ash cloud hasn't travelled this far north. There is also more air pollution in Sydney than there is here in the unpolluted, pure air of Northern NSW. :lol2:

Here is an image of the setting moon taken this morning when I awoke. Took these pics from inside as it was too cold to go outside in my pyjamas. :lol2:

It looked great with its frame of the cocos palm fronds from our front yard trees.
