The beautiful ghost gum tree. A eucalypt in a neighbouring yard. This is a landmark tree beloved by the local birds. It is used as a roost tree by the rainbow lorikeets for most of the year. The magpies love it too. The birds that use it regularly don't take kindly to strangers arriving & they all cooperate in trying to drive it, or them, away. Causes quite a bit of commotion.

How it was two years ago.

    Eight months later.

Eighteen months later. Has lost heaps of leaves.

Two months after the above pic & look at the new growth!!

The wonderful ghost gum & some unusual, for us, cloud formations.

Noticed the late afternoon sun shining on the ghost gum over the back & saw that it was shedding its bark. This is a habit of most eucalypts. Instead of their leaves falling off, their bark does. They will also shed new leaves at branch tips if there is very strong winds, in order to decrease wind resistance. Same with branches, which can drop off without warning. When the bark falls off, the trunk is smooth & a lovely pale colour.

Most of the bark has fallen off the tree & its shiny grey/white trunk looks wonderful. It gleams in the sun. Almost looks as though you can see its veins under its think pale skin. The strips of bark, still hanging on, were swaying with a stiff NE seabreeze.
