Thanks Dawn. I know this poor orchid has been tricked into flowering for Christmas so I'd imagine it will be a little while before it gets back to its true flowering cycle. :sad3:

Well, this phalaenopsis orchid's flowers have drooped & will be finished very soon. :sad3: It has been flowering for quite a while now. At least seven or eight weeks. Shall repot it later this week as the flowers will have dropped off by then.

The phalaenopsis orchid flowers were finally finished two days ago. The stem was quickly yellowing down from the top, so I cut it off 5cms from the base & repotted the plant. Before that, though, I carefully removed all the old potting medium which for this orchid seemed to be an orchid-type potting mix but with quite a few small stones in it. Then I cut off the rotting roots. These looked good further down the roots but the parts closer to the plant were all brown & empty. Off they came. There were a good number of healthy roots left, thank goodness.

Here is a pic of the discarded potting medium with the cut off roots. There was even a sticky label from another pot which was stuck to some of the roots. Those wormy things are the cut off roots.

Previously, one small leaf of this phalaenopsis orchid had already turned yellow & became easily removable. Another was turning yellow when I repotted the plant & within a day was totally finished & was ready to come off. Hope the other three leaves remain ok.

In repotting this orchid, I used the same method (& matching pot) as the other one which was to use sphagnum moss at the bottom of the pot, for at least 2.5/3cms, fill with orchid mix, making sure the roots were well covered then topped (mulched) with more sphagnum moss. Have also fertilised both plants with the special orchid fertiliser.

:apgw: There is a new leaf just starting on this phalaenopsis orchid!!!!! This is fantastic!! :bravo:

The yellowing leaf which can be seen behind the other leaves, in the above pic, eventually fell off. The rest of the leaves are fine.

Is it a flower stem, Dawn??? Being an orchid newbie, I haven't the faintest idea what one would look like in its early stages. :huh2: :lol2:

It looks like one Joy! unfortunately a new leaf and a new flower stalk look very similar in the beginning you will have to wait a bit to see as it develops to be 100 per cent sure. My bet is that it is a flower stalk! . Why I think this is the leaves usually grow from the middle of the old leaves, like the small leaf you see on your one. How ever I have had a new leaf grow from an odd place before. That one is coming from the same spot my flower stalks come from. I have just gone out and checked up on mine and it definitely looks like your flowers are arriving

:apgw: I believe you are correct, Dawn!! :bravo: The leaf buds on these phalaenopsis orchids do look like a leaf not like a knobby thing as this is. Can we have a party or would it be too premature?? :o Don't want to jinx it. :lol2:
