We have been getting quite a few orb spiders on both patios. These have been in all sizes & we enjoy seeing them. These are spiders that spin a large circular web, usually, each night. Some birds love them, so they tend to hide during the day. The back patio does afford them some degree of protection, though & there are plenty of anchor points for their webs with all the plants there.

This one was guarding the outer edge of the back patio & these pics were taken long after it should have hidden. There was space left for us to walk off the patio, without having to break the web. The spider isn't white. It was just the sun shining on it.

This shows more of the web. They are such massive engineering feats & to do this each night is amazing.

It is actually dining on a trapped insect. Hopefully, it is a fly.

We never saw this spider again. :(

Here is a tiny orb spider. It was only 0.625cms long & was crawling along a web it had spun by the fuchsia.

It had a few equally tiny prey stuck in its web.

Here is a slightly larger one that we found the other day amongst the Brazilian Walking irises. Their webs are wonderful.

We seem to have a few orb spiders on both patios. In fact we have quite a good micro-climate with quite a few beneficial insects, spiders & critters, :D as well as the usual nasties. :cranky:

Here is a pic I took yesterday of an orb spider on the back patio.

An orb spider's web in the morning sun. Shame there was no dew. The orb spider either been eaten (which I suspect has happened as there is a hole in the middle) or it is in hiding for the day.
