We used to have a bird's nest fern on a rock. It grew reasonably well until earlier this year when its leaves started to turn brown & wither. They all, gradually, died.

This what the bird's nest fern looked likewhen we first bought it.

The rock. It has some brown moss & this was as it still looked like when the bird's nest died.

Didn't know what to do with the rock so I left it is the small flat dish, in which it sat, & kept watering it.

Put it, out of the way, near the front sliding door/window where it received more indirect light than previously.

After a while it started to grow some greenery. It was maidenhair fern. Now we had a beautiful maidenhair fern out on the front patio but that was long since dead. So the spores didn't come from there. Who knows where they came from???

Another from a slightly different angle. There is also more of the maidenhair fern growing on the other side of the rock. I keep it well watered & continue to fertilise it when I do the other plants.

Here is an image of our beautiful maidenhair fern in all its glory. When it, eventually, started to look a bit tatty, I "pruned" it severely. This was a massacre from which it never recovered & each time it grew some tender fronds some rotten critter would eat them!!!!

IT was a glorious plant which had grown from spore which blew in & settled on the potting mix. It would grow reasonably well but not as well as it did when we moved here & placed it on the front patio. It flourished there. That is, until I had the bright idea to "prune" it.

Now that deserves a :wow: , isn't it stunning. I love this fern. Unfortunately I don't seem to have much luck with them. Love it Joy! Is it still growing the rock!

Yes, Dawn. The pics of the maidenhair fern on the rock were taken today. Can't believe how this happened. These spores must float around, in the air, all the time.

Alas, it is the large, & beautiful, maidenhair fern which is no more. :sad3:

Oh I see Joy! :sheesh: :lol2: I mis- interepreted it but still a wow I would love to have one growing on a rock like that, so beautiful. I am sure it won't be long before it is back in all it's splendour.
Mine when I went to England last year, was left out side in the shade house but it was left too long unwatered ( DD did her best but was short of time). When I came back it was totally totally dead or so I thought I went out to see it just now when I saw these pics of yours. I had just left it lying in the pot all dead, not a good practice in a closed environment. But to my surprise it has ressurected itself it has green shoots coming through all the brown!! I just trimmed everything off right now. I will post a pic later!

That is excellent news, Dawn. :bravo: These are amazing plants & have been known to survive drought. Our gorgeous maidenhair fern which had, also, grown from spore blown in, had a few narrow escapes but, alas & alack, I fear that this time it is, well & truly, done in. :sad3:

There is a small maidenhair fern growing in the pot with the dracaena surculosa punctulata "Sierra Leone" as well. It has been there for two or three years & hasn't grown much. Don't think it can compete with the dracaena. :lol2:

It is looking very good and grown quite a lot since the last picture you put up. The leaves on the maidenhair are so pretty and delicate looking.

They are, aren't they Dawn?? Hope it will totally cover the rock. At the moment it is only on the SW face of the rock. Perhaps if I turned it around  but I am not game to move it. :D

No I would leave it too, most definately it is lovely as is. I think the rock showing makes it an unusual feature plant. I wouldn't want to hide the rock at all. I would love to have one like that.

There is, actually, plenty of the rock still showing, Dawn. It has brown moss growing on it.

The rock is a reddish brown colour & Bruiser thinks it has iron in it because of its colour.

Look at the maidenhair fern on the rock now!!!! :apgw: :excited: It even has had a couple of spore fronds & has been spreading its tiny seeds around. Who know where they have landed. :cool4:

:wave2: Hello there Dawn!! Good to see you!! :hi:

Yes, it does appear as though the MFOAR ( ) is in an excellent position for its happiness. Unfortunately, it is right in our path when we come in from the front patio, which is our front entrance, &, as it has grown so much, we are starting to brush it as we walk past. :O Hopefully, we won't cause it much damage. It looks so pretty, especially with the light shining through its fronds.

About the MFOAR :) sounds like the name of a boat :) I do hope it doesn't grow tooo much then and you have to move it. :O Still I am sure it would be OK ??. Mine, the one that resurrected it self died off again ? I wonder if they are temperamental plants?
