    default Zygoes ~ Schlumbergera Truncata

Post by Joy on Wed 02 Jun 2010, 3:37 pm

Zygoes ~ schlumbergera truncata, AKA as Christmas cactus, Thanksgiving cactus or Easter cactus are autumn or winter flowerers. Contrary to popular belief they shouldn't be treated the same as a desert spiny cactus. They are an epiphyte & are native to the rainforests of the Organ Mountains of Brazil. They grow in the leaf litter which gathers in the crooks of tree trunks or branches & have no spines. Unlike desert cacti, they don't tolerate direct, full sun & get easily scorched, so place them in a shady spot which gets bright indirect light. They don't like dry conditions, either. Remember, they are a rainforest plant. They do not like light at night & start flowering when the nights lengthen after the autumnal equinox. If they are lit by street or house lighting that will inhibit their flowering so move them, if you can, before the buds arrive.

Apparently, they shouldn't be fertilised once they go into their flowering cycle. I fertilised ours the other day. Still, I have done this before & they flowered profusely. Hope they will this time. They must be grown in well-draining potting mix. Some recommend orchid mix for these plants, which makes sense as they are an epiphyte like orchids. Don't overwater but they do need more when they are flowering. Just make sure they drain well. Do not use garden soil to grow them in pots. Like most potted plants, they don't do well in it.

Here is our first flower for this year. It is from what remains of a zygo we have had for 22 years. It seemed to disappear from sight when a self-sown maidenhair fern took over its container. It has now reappeared, as the maidenhair fern has died. :sad3: Do not know what type of zygo it is but it was a soft pink. This year it looks more like a "White Fantasy".

    Two days ago & yesterday.

Today's images. A series of images taken with some difficulty as it is fairly well hidden amongst other plants. :lol2:

I always go overboard when the first of a plant's flowers arrive.

This one did get wet. It is a "White Fantasy" zygo bud which was covered in rain spatter from the heavy rain we had last night & this morning.

Their flowers are a very delicate colour, on both types you have.

Thanks Dawn. The unknown zygo was, normally, a very lovely soft pink. Here is a pic from last year of its only flower. The poor flower was a bit deformed as it hadn't flowered for quite some time.

We have two other zygoes. A "Sterling", which we bought last year, as well as a "Strawberry Fantasy" which is still forming its buds.

Here is the "Sterling" from last year. It has many more buds this year & will be interesting to see what colour they will be.

The "Strawberry Fantasy" has shown us two different shades of red in the two previous flowering seasons it has had since we bought it. Think the difference in colorations is due to the night temps. Do feel that the colder they are, the more intense the colours are.

First year (2008) of the "Strawberry Fantasy" zygo's flowering.

Yes, it does look a little different, now that you mention it. The pic was taken looking straight at it but it is not the same shape as this one of a "White Fantasy" taken last year, also.

The first of the "Strawberry Fantasy" zygo buds close to flowering. It has turned this lovely red which was welcome as the smaller buds look quite pale.
