On the 23rd of September 2009, a massive dust storm covered most of our state of NSW. It was a thoudand kilometres wide & came from more than a thousand kilometres inland.  A strong NW wind carried many millions of tonnes of precious topsoil from the desert regions of the state & so much of it was lost out at sea. It even fell on New Zealand which is 1500 kms away.

We were relatively lucky, as we didn't get the very strong winds or the very, very thick red dust but it was bad enough to keep us indoors for the day with all windows tightly shut.  Did not wish to breathe in dust which would become mud in your lungs. The birds disappeared, except for the magpie couple as they have a nest in a nearby tree. It was eerily quiet as we are so used to hearing bird sounds all day. The next day, everything is coated in a film of red dust.
