Heading off on our long road trip to Queanbeyan in the Southern Tablelands of south eastern NSW. It is adjacent to Australia's national capital Canberra situated in the Australian Capital Territory ACT. It will be a total distance of just over 1000kms one way so we shall do it in two stages south & three stages north. The trip will see us travelling on four different highways plus toll motorways. Here we are just setting off down the Pacific Highway south of Woodburn. By the looks of this warning sign there must be some new roadworks in this stretch of highway.

The things we see on the road. This refers to the Westpac Surf Lifesaving Rescue helicopter service which is used in our area for land & sea rescues. This service is funded by donations.

A bank of smoke from bushfires down south. We are in the Clarence Valley here.

The jacarandas were in full bloom at this time of the year. This region, as well as the city of Grafton in the Clarence Valley, is noted for them.

There seems to be a smoky haze dulling the blue sky. We must be in the smoke bank.

We are now on the newly finished, & much appreciated, Sapphire - Woolgoolga bypass near Coffs Harbour which is a banana & blueberry growing region. The areas covered with netting are blueberries. There are bananas growing on the hill to the right.

Joy for the great pictures!!  The jacarandas trees were so beautiful.  I wish I had one in my yard.
The little girl on the back of the truck eat watermelon was so cute.
I found the blueberry netting fascinating.  It must be really hard to put up such big nets.  Will they have to cover the bananas later?
Wondering if the police car made Bruce driver slow. :lol3:
Great pictures, thanks you so much!!

Thanks Granny, this just the start of many, many pics.  :lol3: Yes, the police vehicle did keep Bruce in check for many kilometres until he managed to creep past it. These 4WD police vehicles are the type in normal use in the rural & regional commands such as our town, outside of the cities. Of course there are also the paddy wagons.

The blueberries are netted to protect their easily-damaged fruit from birds & hail. Bananas are less fragile so need less protection. Just the banana bunches are covered with plastic bags to hasten ripening & to protect them from flying foxes. The banana trees are quite tall & logistically it would be prohibitively expensive to net them as the plantations are large. When harvesting the bananas the trees are cut down to get at the bunches. Each tree usually just has one large bunch of bananas. New trees grow from where the old one was cut down.
