We live in the region of New South Wales (NSW) Australia, called the Northern Rivers. This region is much closer to Brisbane, the capital & main city of Queensland, than to our own capital of Sydney.

The Northern Rivers consists of four rivers & their individual valleys. They are, from the south, the Clarence River, which is the largest, sometimes called the Big River. The next is the Richmond River, the valley in which we live. Our local river, where our town is sited, is the much smaller Evans River, a tidal estuary, & is part of the Richmond Valley. The next river heading north is the Brunswick River in the Brunswick Valley. The fourth river & valley is the Tweed River/Valley which forms part of the NSW/Qld states' boundary.

The floor of these valleys are flat alluvial plains, prone to flooding during times of heavy rain. They are also good for growing sugarcane & this is the main crop in all these valleys, with beef inland & to the southern areas .

The major centre of the Clarence Valley is Grafton with smaller centres of coastal Yamba, nearby Maclean & several small villages such as Iluka (on the coast across the river mouth from Yamba) & Ulmarra. The first of these in this series of images is a few taken during my first brief visit to Harwood, a small village situated on Harwood Island. There are several large islands in the lower reaches of the Clarence River delta just before it exits into the Pacific Ocean.

An ancient weatherbboard shed mouldering away in Harwood. Looks like a sea eagle thermalling up in the sky. A large mango tree to the left.

This bridge across the Clarence River is a lifting bridge to allow for large vessels travelling along the river.

Wonderful!!  Another road trip!!   (This is me jumping for joy.)
First what a beautiful day for a drive, the sky is so beautiful.   Good picture of the sugar mill.  Wondering what the tall tower is used for.  It looks like you could climb to the top.
The Clarence River is amazing.  Beautiful blue water! :photos:  Great pictures of the bridge.
:goodone: Speaking of blue water, the white egret in front of the Clarence River is beautiful!  What is the sign under the egret?   (It looks like a eye with eye lashes.)  :bravo: Great picture of the pied cormorant and egret together!
The antique shop looks great.  Did you stop and go in?
:good:  Great old shed.  I wonder how old it is.  Very rustic, makes a great picture.
Great raod trip pictures!  :thankyou: Thank you so much Joy!!
                 :hello: Granny

Thanks Granny.  Apart from the first three pics the images were all taken from the balcony of the Harwood "Hilton" pub. We were there to have lunch with friends. The pics of the egret & cormorant were taken with full 50X zoom & I only noticed the "eye" on the jetty when the pics were uploaded to my PC.  Could not see it with the naked eye. Think it was just interesting graffiti. The "tower" is the sugar mill chimney or steam exhaust. There is no smoke just steam which has been "scrubbed" to make sure it is clean. The mill may have not been operating that day for whatever reason.

Never went into the antique shop which was just across the road from the pub. Two reasons. 1 We don't have the $$$s or the room at home for stuff & 2 I am allergic to old furniture & other items. Sneeze profusely & my eyes water non-stop the moment I walk into one. Same even with old oil painting masterpieces at art galleries.

Have since taken more images from another trip to Harwood Island & will post them soon.  :D

  Thanks for the great pictures Joy!  I am looking forward to more.
:wow:  Your allergies are really bad.  I am :sorry2: .  That must be awful.  Mine only act up in the spring and fall from pollen.

Think it's most likely dust mites, that would be harboured by old stuff, that I'm allergic to in those instances, Granny. That &, of course, pollens which we can be subjected to all year round.  :mad2:

Shall post the other pics ASAP.   :good:

Another very small village on the Clarence River, in the Clarence Valley, is Ulmarra which is an Aboriginal word for "bend in the river". It looks to be an historic village with many very old building which have been restored. The rivers were the main arteries in the early days of white settlement, which is why there are many of these small villages along them.

Coldstream Street Ulmarra. There are plenty of solar panls on the roof of this building.

The local pub. It's right on the river. This style of older corner pub is very common throughout Australia. For some reason banks & pubs were always built on the corners of the streets.
