This is wattle flower time again & the Australian national floral emblem, the golden wattle - Acacia pycnantha - is in full bloom. Watle Day is celebrated on the 1st of September. Other wattles seemed to have finished flowering especially the creamy-flowered ones.

While wattles are native to many other countries, Australia has, by far, the largest number of wattle species with about 1000 different types of them.

Here are some images, taken in the past two days during our trip to & from Brisbane, Qld,, of golden wattles growing on the roadside of the Pacific Highway.

The wattles growing on the cuttings of the Ballina bypass would have been planted as a quick growing tree to beautify & stabilise the cutting.

 Beautiful tree, and I bet they smell wonderful!  After looking at all your great pictures I had to Google them.  I didn't know that it was your national flower or that it was on the Australian coat of arms.

    • In Australia, Acacias are called Wattles as they were believed to have been used by the early settlers to make the wattle and daub houses.

Then I had to find out what a wattle and daub house looked like.  I found that on YouTube.

It also said the early people used wattle to make tools and weapons. So I then had to search for some information on that.

Your beautiful pictures gave my little pea brain a big work out.  Thank you so much, I enjoyed every picture!  Granny

Thank you for your very interesting links, Granny.  :thankyou: They are much appreciated.  :cool3:

Australia's national sporting colours are gold (yellow) & green, the colours of the golden wattle. Not so long ago international botanical authorities wanted the Australian wattles to be called acacias (as they are) but changed their minds after protests. Think they were also called wattles by the early British settlers as they tended to name things after their familiar "back home" plants, etc.  Same with birds.    :lol2:

  I had not thought of the Australia's national sporting colors.   :sheesh:  I'm glad they didn't change the name.  I like golden wattle.  Thanks again for the great pictures!

It would be too dangerous for a hayfever-prone person such as me, who is also troubled by perfumes & fragrances, to wilfully put my schnozz anywhere near the fluffy flowers of a wattle.   :faint:     Am also allergic to the pollens of some flowers.   :sos:

Went up the Pacific Highway to Queensland again yesterday &  week later from the last trip, the golden wattle is still blooming along the side of the Pacific Highway.
