Both of our very neglected cymbidium orchids are now growing flower spears. This is amazing as they truly have been, largely, left to their own devices. Occasionally watered & on the very rare occasion, given a dose of fertilise. Yet here they are producing flower spears.

This is a pic of the beginning of the growth of the "Kakadu Crystal" flower spear. It has already produced a flower spear for us (other than the one which was there when we bought it, of course) so this is its second for us.

The "Kakadu Crystal" cymbidium orchid's new flower spear is now growing rapidly. Have put it on the patio as the lawn man shredded some of its leaves & damaged the flower spear (oh no) when using his whippersnipper. Grr.

Finally, a flower spear growing on the tiny Valley Olympic "Prolific" cymbidium orchid. This is the first flower spear it has grown since we bught it. Probably has been putting all it energy into regrowing bulbs & leaves. It appeared to miniaturise itself & was reduced to just one small bulb after its original flower spear died off. It is good to see it has survived & grown more bulbs.

Boohoo     A major disaster. This is the destroyed flowers from the "Kakadu Crystal" cymbidium orchid which was snapped off the flower spear. The longer stem spear is still attached to the bulb & this section with the buds is only about one third of its length. It appears as though the whippersnipper did more damage than we thought. It seems as though the stem was partially broken then the bud stem portion finally fell out through its protective covering as it became heavier.   :grr: . So no "Kakadu Crystal" flowers this year. It was two years since the last flowers from this cymbidium.

Luckily the flower spear on the Valley Olympic "Prolific" is still growing nicely. It would have been wonderful to have both of them having flowers at the same time.

Thankfully the Valley Olympic "Prolific" cymbidium orchid continues to grow its flower spear. Doesn't seem to have much of a stem as yet.

:aargh: Bad whippersnipper!  Maybe the shamrock will bring the kakadu crystal good luck, and it will try again soon.  Hope you don't have to wait two years.  Granny

So do I, Granny. It was a terrible shame as it would have had such beautiful flowers & the plant expends much energy in producing it. Should present him with a bill for $30 as that is about what one would cost.  :grr:  Fingers crossed for the other cymbidium.  :luck:

The Valley Olympic "Prolific" cymbidium orchid flower spear is developing fast now with plenty of buds. Still has a short stem.

The Valley Olympic "Prolific" cymbidium orchid flower spear's buds are starting to change colour. Interestingly, the "Kakadu Crystal" cymbidium, which unfortunately lost its flower spear, seems to be growing a new flower spear. It is very small at the moment but has all the hallmarks of a spear. Do hope so.

Hopefully this is a new flower spear on the "Kakadu Crystal" cymbidium orchid to replace the one that was broken off.

We certainly hope so, Granny. They take so long to open as the flowers last so long. Several weeks at least. Thankfully the other cymbidium "Kakadu Crystal" is definitely growing a new flower spear.  :bravo:

Granny, it's when the cymbidium orchid flowers are open that they will put on a beautiful display which will last up to 3 months. The buds are taking nearly 2 months to get to the opening stage from the time the flowerspear first appears.
