We fell in love with this, very easy to care for, epiphyte when we saw images of its amazing, striking & beautiful flower. Found some for sale from a nursery, only a few hundred kms north of where we live. Ordered their last ten mature plants & were delighted, when they arrived a few days later, by courier, in very good condition. Sent four of them, immediately by post, to my daughter who lives another few hundred kms south of us. They arrived safe & sound two days later, seemingly none the worse for wear. They are a very hardy little plant. Some have been found, flourishing, in abandoned gardens. This is an epiphyte which can cope with drought so don't need to be watered frequently, like some epiphytes. They are a member of the bromeliad family & afre native to Brazil.

They apparently flower in early spring but I do think perhaps we ordered them too late for this to happen. Maybe next spring. We have potted them & placed them in a well lit shady positions. They are supposed to do well indoors, so have three inside & three out on the front patio which has plenty of light but only some late afternoon sun. They all have sent up offshoots, one plant has three. Their foliage looks very similar to our tillandsia cyanea. Growing these will, most certainly, be a wonderful learning experience for us. Hopefully, they will continue to surprise us.

Their arrival, on the 12th August of this year.

All potted. Some had the remains of last year's flowers so don't hold out any hope that they will flower again. It will be up to their pups.

The indoor ones. One went into Bruiser's Bat Cave which is what I call his computer room. This will prove just how hardy they are.

    The outdoor ones.

The three on the front patio.

The one out on the back patio. This one had wider & much longer leaves than the others.

Two months later found this pup, or offshoot, growing in the pot of one of the indoor plants.

Then the others joined in. Today's images. Have seen in some websites that these plants will flower all year round in some climates. Hopefully, that will be the case here, as we live in a subtropical climate.

    Indoor & outdoor.

Outdoor billbergia nutans oe "Queen's Tears". Another name is Friendship Plant as they are so prolific with offshoots or pups, so are given away to friends.

    The second has three pups.

Well, all the billbergia nutans "Queen's Tears" offshoots have grown & grown, except for the one that was in Bruiser's Bat Cave, so today we moved it out among other plants in the living area. Hopefully it will get the message.

The other two which live inside are going well & are a darker green than the ones on the front patio. The one on the left has four offshoots & the one on the right has one which is, now, bigger than the parent.

There are four buds in three containers. Naturally, it was Eagle-eyed Bruiser who spotted them first. Don't know how I missed them. :sheesh:

    Here is the first.

We hadn't seen them before, either, Dawn, but fell in love with the flower when we saw it. Have been waiting, rather impatiently I might add, for the first flowers. Like most of the bromeliaceae family, it seems to only flower in the new plants, so we have had to wait for the offshoots to grow before they flowered. Fortunately, there are many more new plants with, hopefully, flowers to come.

They have opened further. Must post some more images.

The second & the fourth flower which is yet to open. It seems to be hard to get a clear shot of this flower. It may be because it is so thin & there is so much else around it. The camera doesn't know which one to focus on. This is the flower that is in the same pot as the third one.

Two of the billbergia nutans "Queen's Tears" flowers have opened some of their flowers.

    They are really quite unusual.
